New Mexico is a beautiful and unique place. It has good music, great food, and honest people. The rave scene in our city is a reflection of that. Or, at least, it used to be.
But we’ve lost our way. Too consumed by the wrong things for too long we have become the very thing we swore to stay away from. No one of us is above this failure and yet so few of us are willing to admit it.
That’s why Our mission is simple. We want to start over. We want to rebuild. We want to do it right this time. We want to create a safe haven for the outsiders of this rave scene to finally return to the environment we helped create. But we also want to teach the next ravers in line how it’s done right, and proper and with purpose and a belief in what we’re doing. We’ve lost that. It’s time to admit it. But it’s also time to get it back. Together.
There will be three major standards we at Our Dancefloor will stand by over the process of the years to come, and they will all revolve around the philosophy of House and Techno, and what it has taught us in our travels around the world.
First, will be EQUALITY, and the commitment to a safe and inclusive environment. All Genders, Colors and Beliefs will be accepted on our dancefloor and tolerance and Unity will always be the paramount practices we will both ask of others and of ourselves.
Rave culture is one that encourages and even enforces safety in all surroundings, and we will be no different. We want our dancers and DJs to feel as safe as family, because that is what you are to us. But building a family is about admittance and a willingness to commit to the well being of all involved. If you don’t respect us or those around you, please don’t expect to be included in what we are doing next.
The Second standard will be the celebration and constant creation of ART. Rave culture has always had art as a major aspect, but over the last few years it has been overwhelmed by the commitment to Music, and rightfully so, but with that we have lost our way in the inclusion and support of the other forms of art that exist in our lives.
Because of that we at Our Dancefloor are committed not just to the celebration of all art forms but also to the creation of them. Every gathering we will ever hold will not just have the option for artists to present and share their own creations, but we will also be very committed to the dancers having a chance to create while on the dancefloor.
When you attend our gatherings, you will not just be in attendance, but also a part of the art itself. Each of us is an artist, and each of us is also a walking, breathing, living, creation of art ourselves. It’s time to embrace that and to share it as a counter to what has become an abandonment of it by the emergence of DJ Culture, which is the next standard we must face.
The third and final Standard will always be MUSIC, but we must change the way it is being done, and we must start with the DJ. Rave culture in our recent years has been overrun by the Superstar DJ, and for good reason. But what has happened is that we have suddenly begun to ask too much of the DJ, and perhaps that is where they fail. We must stop looking at the DJ like they are the pop star and start asking them to commit to their true purpose as music directors. Asking a DJ to promote or even carry a show is asking them to move away from their true focus, which should always be the Music.
It is not our intent to criticize DJ culture, but rather to ask it to grow with the rest of us. We must take back control of the environment from them so that they can remain in control of the music. The music will always be the reason we are there, but the DJ isn’t. We must return to that, and we must ask the DJ’s around us to grow and to hold themselves to a standard we all must return to as well.
We can grow, and we can thrive together, but it must start with admitting our failures, accepting our faults, and agreeing to start over. With Our Dancefloor we will always be committed to House and Techno, and our three Standards of Equality, Art and Music. We hope you agree to join us one day. These words are written with love and commitment to Inclusion. Its now or never. Please come see what we’re doing, and hopefully be a part of it.
PEACE. LOVE. UNITY. RESPECT.
DOS BEARS.
